EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled 'The Return of His Royal Highness Prince Albert and His Grace the Duke of Wellington from the Review on Wimbledon Common, 1850' by Smyth, offers a glimpse into a significant historical moment in British military history. The scene unfolds on Wimbledon Common in London, where Field Marshal Prince Albert, the consort of Queen Victoria, conducted a review and inspection of the 11th Hussars. Surrounded by a multitude of high-ranking military officials, including General Viscount Combermere, General Sir Willoughby Gordon, Lieutenant-General Wyndham, and the Earl of Cardigan, the Duke of Wellington, a former Prime Minister and renowned military leader, looked on. The group inspected the troops with great attention, ensuring each soldier was in top form. The troops then marched, trotted, and galloped past the reviewing stand, executing each movement with precision. The Duke of Wellington and his companions then proceeded to inspect the line, making a minute examination of the corps. The print captures the essence of the patriotic spirit of the era, with the military personnel dressed in their finest uniforms, horses adorned with regal trappings, and the Duke of Wellington, a symbol of British strength and wisdom, leading the proceedings. The print is an exquisite example of the detailed engravings produced by the Illustrated London News during the 19th century, offering a window into the past and a testament to the grandeur of military pageantry.
