EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Richard I, the King of England during the 12th century. As the third son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard I reigned from 1189 to 1199 and was famously known as Richard Coueur de Lion or the Lionheart. The image portrays a regal monarch dressed in medieval attire, complete with a helmet symbolizing his role as a warrior king. Richard's reign was marked by his adventurous spirit and military prowess. He spent much of his time abroad, leading troops on the Third Crusade in an attempt to reclaim Jerusalem from Muslim control. However, fate had other plans for him when he was captured by Leopold V of Austria on his way back from the Holy Land in 1192. This led to years of captivity in Germany before returning to England. The print also alludes to Richard's ongoing conflicts with France, which ultimately resulted in his untimely demise. It is believed that he met his end due to an infected arrow wound while engaged in battle against French forces. This historical engraving not only captures King Richard I's physical appearance but also hints at the religious fervor and political turmoil that defined this era. It serves as a reminder of one man's indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication to Christianity amidst a backdrop of war-torn Europe.
