Richard Manks, the Pedestrian, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Richard Manks, the Pedestrian, 1850. Pedestrian Feat of 1000 miles in 1000 Hours. This unparalleled feat has just been accomplished by Richard Manks, a native of Warwickshire...Manks's style of walking is to bend forward the body, whereby he throws its weight on the knees. His step is short, and his feet are raised only a few inches from the ground, which quickens his pace, and enables him to walk with more ease, and better able to endure the fatigue of his long journey than by walking perfectly erect, which would throw too much of the weight of the body on the ankle joints...He walks in light shoes and lamb's wool stockings, which preserve his feet from injury. He packs the inside of his shoe-heels with a portion of horse-hair sock...The crowds on the distant hills were unprecedented. Manks... had on preceding Sabbaths performed his task in his usual Sunday clothes'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

Richard Manks, the Pedestrian: A 1000-Mile Feat of Endurance, 1850 This photograph, believed to be from the Illustrated London News, showcases the extraordinary achievement of Richard Manks, a native of Warwickshire, England, who accomplished the unprecedented feat of walking 1000 miles in 1000 hours. The image, taken during this remarkable journey, captures Manks in his full length, showcasing his unique walking style. Manks's unconventional gait involved bending forward, distributing his weight on his knees, taking short steps, and raising his feet only a few inches from the ground. This method, which quickened his pace and reduced strain on his ankles, allowed him to endure the grueling journey with greater ease. Dressed in light shoes and lamb's wool stockings, Manks took care to protect his feet from injury. He filled the inside of his shoe-heels with horsehair socks, ensuring a comfortable and cushioned stride. The crowds that gathered on the distant hills were unprecedented, as Manks had previously completed his daily tasks in his Sunday clothes. This photograph, a testament to Manks's determination and perseverance, offers a glimpse into the world of pedestrianism – an unusual pastime that captivated the Victorian public. This engraving, from the 19th century, offers a fascinating look into the world of long-distance walking and the unusual hobbies that captivated the British public during this era. The image, though its creator remains unknown, serves as a reminder of the human spirit's ability to push boundaries and accomplish the seemingly impossible.
