The Right Hon. Fox Maule, M.P. for Perth, Secretary at War, 1850. Portrait of Fox Maule, a member of the Privy Council. On the accession of the Whigs to office in 1835, Mr. Maule was appointed Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department....in 1841 he was appointed Vice-President of the Board of Trade. In 1842 he was elected Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow, took a leading position in the memorable struggle of the Scotch Church, and brought before the House of Commons the petition of the great evangelical body on the subject of non-intrusion, and for their independence in spiritual matters, as guaranteed to them by the Revolution settlement, and recognised in judicial decisions in Scotland...Mr. Maule was the first member of the Whig Government of 1841 who took a part in the agitation for Free Trade.
