The Rivals - painted by J. Sant, 1850. Creator: Unknown
The Rivals - painted by J. Sant, 1850. Exhibition of the British Institution. The scene is on the ice. The object of the Rivals is a coquettish little lady, in her sledge, with a pet dog resting at her feet, upon a costly carpet. One of the suitors, a skater, has evidently, for the moment, gained the fair one's eye, but is jealously watched by the rival suitor, who drives the sledge. The composition is good, and the picture is painted with much breadth and richness of colour'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

The Rivals
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating 19th century painting by the renowned artist J. Sant, created in 1850. This masterpiece was showcased at the British Institution Exhibition and gained significant attention from the press, including the Illustrated London News. The scene unfolds on the icy expanse, where the focus is on a coquettish young lady, seated in her sled, her pet dog resting at her feet on a plush carpet. The lady's attention is momentarily captured by one of her suitors, who skates gracefully nearby. However, her other suitor, who drives the sled, watches jealously from the background. The composition of this painting is excellent, with a rich palette and broad brushstrokes that bring the wintry scene to life. The artist has expertly captured the essence of flirtation and rivalry, set against the backdrop of a seasonal pastime. The ladies' fashionable attire, complete with muffs and fur-trimmed coats, adds to the overall charm of the painting. The inclusion of the pet dog and the sled adds a touch of whimsy and kitsch to the artwork. This painting offers a glimpse into the Victorian era, where leisure activities such as ice skating were popular pastimes for the upper classes. The meticulous attention to detail, from the intricate apparel to the icy road transport, makes this painting a must-see for any art enthusiast or collector. The painting's enduring appeal lies in its ability to transport us to a bygone era, where the simple pleasures of life were savored and celebrated. Whether you're a fan of 19th century art, fashion, or just enjoy a good love story, "The Rivals" is sure to captivate and delight.
