Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester, (1933). Portrait of Robert Dudley (1532-1588), 1st Earl of Leicester, favourite of Queen Elizabeth I of England. A courtier of Elizabeth I, Dudley was regarded as her most likely choice for a husband. However his wifes mysterious death in 1560 placed a dark spot on his reputation. In 1561 he suggested to Philip II to restore Roman Catholicism in England in return for Philips endorsement of his to Elizabeth. Yet by 1563 Elizabeth realised the impracticality of such a marriage. She offered his hand to Mary Queen of Scots and created him Earl of Leicester in 1564, however Mary married Lord Darnley. This print captures the enigmatic figure of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester. Painted in 1933 by an unknown artist, this portrait depicts a man who was once considered the most likely candidate to become the husband of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Dudley's story is one filled with intrigue and controversy. His wife's mysterious death in 1560 cast a shadow over his reputation, leading many to question his involvement. In an attempt to regain favor with the queen, he proposed restoring Roman Catholicism in England to please Philip II of Spain.
