"Rosalind and Celia" ("As You Like It", by Miss Edwards in the Exhibition of the Society of British Artists, 1862. Engraving of a painting...by a lady previously unknown to fame...Poor Rosalind! So fair and feminine...she should never have assumed the male attire...she makes...a very a sorry page. Her sprightly, witty companion may well banter her upon her effeminacy...The pretty runaways should, at all events, change their costumes...We think that the almost querulous plaints of the tenderhearted lovelorn maiden, her yearning for some casual word of comfort from her kind and faithful though mischievous companion, is expressed with extraordinary felicity, not only in the expression of Rosalind's face, but in her pretty lackadaisical attitude, the wobegone inclination of the head, and the action of both hands. Miss Edwards has avoided a vulgar reading...by making the assumption of the page's dress not too obvious and complete. The contrast of the dark-eyed mercurial Celia is equally happy; her protecting, supporting, and admonishing gestures (seen again in the action of the hands more particularly), her charmingly arch expression, and her air of superior wisdom and firmness as she counsels and rallies her weaker companion all in a breath'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Rosalind and Celia" is a captivating photographic print depicting the beloved characters from Shakespeare's comedy "As You Like It," as portrayed by Miss Edwards in the Exhibition of the Society of British Artists in 1862. The image, created by the skilled hand of W. Thomas, captures the essence of Rosalind and Celia's unique bond, showcasing their wit, playfulness, and the deep affection they share. Rosalind, with her fair complexion and delicate features, is depicted as a "sorry page," having assumed male attire in her exile from the court. Her sprightly companion, Celia, teases her about her effeminacy, yet offers comfort and support. The artist masterfully conveys Rosalind's yearning for reassurance through her expressive face, her lackadaisical attitude, and the wobegone inclination of her head. Her hands, too, add to the emotion, as they convey a sense of vulnerability and longing. Miss Edwards' depiction of Celia is equally enchanting. With her dark eyes and mercurial demeanor, she is the embodiment of wisdom, firmness, and protection. Her charmingly arch expression and her supporting, admonishing gestures, as seen in the action of her hands, add depth to their relationship. Celia's role as a steadfast companion and confidante is beautifully conveyed through her superior wisdom and her ability to both console and tease her friend. Through this photographic print, W. Thomas and Miss Edwards have avoided a vulgar reading of these characters by making Rosalind's assumption of male attire not too obvious and complete. The contrast between the two women is striking, and their connection shines through, making this a truly extraordinary representation of the beloved characters from "As You Like It.
