The well of the Roux Combaluzier elevator, Eiffel Tower, Paris, 1889
The well of the Roux Combaluzier elevator, Eiffel Tower, Paris, 1889. When it opened for the Paris Universal Exposition of 1889, the Eiffel Tower had four elevators. The north and south elevators were installed by the American firm Otis, while the east and west ones were supplied by Roux Combaluzier Lepape, a French company. The French elevators were operated by hydraulically powered chains and rollers. Their performance was poor, however and they were replaced by new lifts supplied by the Fives-Lille company in 1897 and 1899. A print from Figaro Exposition, Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent and Co, Limited, 4 Stationers Hall Court, London, 1889

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the grandeur of the Paris Universal Exposition in 1889, showcasing a remarkable engineering feat - The well of the Roux Combaluzier elevator at the iconic Eiffel Tower. Standing tall and proud, this magnificent structure boasted four elevators that transported visitors to breathtaking heights. While two of these elevators were installed by American firm Otis, it was French company Roux Combaluzier Lepape that supplied the east and west lifts. Powered by hydraulics, chains, and rollers, these French elevators were an innovative concept at the time. However, their performance fell short of expectations. As technology advanced rapidly, these underperforming lifts were eventually replaced with new ones from Fives-Lille in 1897 and 1899. Nonetheless, this print serves as a testament to the ingenuity and ambition displayed during this era of industrial progress. The image captures not only machinery but also people - a reminder that behind every great invention are individuals who dared to dream big. It transports us back to a time when Paris was buzzing with excitement during one of history's most renowned expositions. With its monochrome aesthetic lending an air of nostalgia, this engraving allows us to appreciate both the beauty and complexity involved in creating such an architectural marvel. It is a window into nineteenth-century France's dedication towards pushing boundaries in engineering and design. This print from Heritage Images invites us on a journey through time while reminding us how innovation continues to shape our world today.
