Ruins of the Fallen Houses in Pilgrim-street, City, 1858. Creator: Unknown

Ruins of the Fallen Houses in Pilgrim-street, City, 1858. Engraving from a photograph by Butler and Dyer, of Walnut-tree-walk, Lambeth. The whole of the buildings forming the south side of the street are nearly 200 years old, and for some time past their tottering condition has aroused the attention of the neighbouring inhabitants...the Vintners Company, anxious to improve the neighbourhood and add to the worth of property of theirs...proceeded to rebuild two of [the houses]...This resulted in steps being taken to remove some houses adjoining; and, according to some authorities, this caused the downfall of those now in ruins. The house occupied by Mr. Solomons...was full of valuable furniture...but no one was upon the premises...Eastward still stands the house and shop of Mr. J. J. Clagg, carpenter, but in a most dangerous condition. In this dwelling there were...nine persons asleep, who were nearly suffocated by the clouds of dust which surrounded them...Mr. Painter, the inspector of the district, was upon the spot within ten minutes...and the Messrs. Cook, the City contractors, sent a number of men to shore up the adjoining houses: this they did with much alacrity, notwithstanding the danger which encompassed them on every side'. EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative engraving captures the ruins of the fallen houses in Pilgrim-street, City, in 1858. The image, taken from a photograph by Butler and Dyer, provides a haunting glimpse into the past, with the remnants of once-sturdy structures now reduced to rubble. The buildings on the south side of the street, which date back nearly 200 years, had been in a precarious condition for some time. The Vintners' Company, with the aim of enhancing the neighborhood and increasing the value of their property, had initiated the rebuilding of two houses. However, this action set off a chain reaction, leading to the downfall of the houses now in ruins. The house once occupied by Mr. Solomons was filled with valuable furniture, but unfortunately, no one was on the premises at the time of the collapse. The house and shop of Mr. J. J. Clagg, the carpenter, still stand to the east, but in a most perilous state. Tragically, nine people were asleep inside when the houses crumbled, nearly suffocating them in the clouds of dust that surrounded them. Mr. Painter, the district inspector, arrived on the scene within ten minutes, and the Messrs. Cook, City contractors, sent a team to shore up the adjacent houses. Despite the imminent danger that surrounded them, the men worked with great alacrity to prevent further damage and save lives." This poignant moment in history serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of urban development and the importance of safety measures to protect the community. The ruins of Pilgrim-street stand as a testament to the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of those who once inhabited the area and the events that shaped its future.
