Rural rehabilitation, Tulare County, California, 1938. Creator: Dorothea Lange
Rural rehabilitation, Tulare County, California. In 1936 this family was on relief. With a Farm Security Administration (FSA) loan of seven hundred and eighty dollars, they were able to purchase and install an irrigating pump for the vineyard, a team, and the balance gave them subsistence and operating expenses for the first grape season. This house which the family has just finished building is made of adobe bricks, made from clay on the farm. The cash cost in building the house was about six hundred dollars

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph, captured by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange in 1938, depicts a moment of hope and resilience in the heart of the rural Californian countryside. Tulare County, California, was one of the regions most affected by the Great Depression, with many families struggling to make ends meet. In this image, a family stands proudly in front of their newly built adobe house, a testament to their determination and the assistance they received from the Farm Security Administration (FSA). The family had previously been on relief, but with an FSA loan of $780, they were able to purchase an irrigating pump for their vineyard, a team, and cover their subsistence and operating expenses for the first grape season. The house, made of adobe bricks sourced from the farm, cost around $600 to build. The family's hard work and perseverance are reflected in the completed house and the flourishing orange trees in the garden. The photograph captures the essence of rural rehabilitation during this era, a time when the government, through programs like the FSA, worked to provide financial assistance to struggling farmers and rural communities. The image also embodies the spirit of self-sufficiency and the connection between people and the land that is inherent in rural life. Dorothea Lange's masterful composition and use of light and shadow further enhance the emotional impact of this powerful image.
