Russian pony and sheep from Bomarsund, brought by Captain Hall, H.M.S. "Hecla", 1854. Animals and war trophies taken from Finland during the Crimean War by a British naval officer. The sheep is very small, with a coat...of very short, curly wool. It generally resembles a Welsh sheep; is broad across the eyes, and has small black horns...The pony is also black, with a star in the forehead, a white stripe on the bridge of the nose, and a white mark between the nostrils...The feet are in good order; of course they have not yet been shod...behind the sheep is a piece of granite taken from the fortress of Bomarsund; and on the top of it is a shell also from that place'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, published in the Illustrated London News in 1854, showcases a Russian pony and sheep brought back as war trophies by Captain Hall of H.M.S. "Hecla" during the Crimean War. The exact creator of the image remains unknown. The sheep, depicted behind the pony, is described as being very small with a coat of short, curly wool, resembling a Welsh sheep, and having small black horns. The pony, also black, bears distinctive markings, including a star on its forehead, a white stripe on the bridge of its nose, and a white mark between its nostrils. The condition of the animals' feet suggests they have not yet been shod. The backdrop of the image includes a piece of granite taken from the fortress of Bomarsund and a shell from the same location. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the Aland War, a lesser-known conflict during the Crimean War, and the spoils of war that were taken as mementos by the victors. The print offers a glimpse into the past, providing a metaphorical connection between the animals and the ammunition, symbolizing the contrasting elements of peace and warfare.
