EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by renowned photographer Dorothea Lange in 1939, depicts Sam Cates from Oklahoma as he establishes his new farm in Cow Hollow, Malheur County, Oregon. In the image, Cates proudly holds his great grandfather's gun, a remarkable heirloom that has been passed down through generations. This antique firearm holds a rich history; it was brought all the way from South Carolina to Texas before making its way to Arkansas and then Oklahoma. The photo captures the resilience and determination of this hardworking farmer during a challenging time in American history - the Great Depression. As economic struggles swept across the country, families like Cates' sought solace and opportunity in new lands. Lange's lens beautifully portrays an elderly man who carries not only his family's legacy but also their hopes for a better future. The worn lines on Cates' face speak volumes about years of laborious work and unwavering commitment to provide for his loved ones. Through this still image, we are transported back to an era when people relied on their own strength and resourcefulness to overcome adversity. It serves as a poignant reminder of our collective heritage and the sacrifices made by previous generations. Dorothea Lange masterfully captures both the individual story of Sam Cates and the broader narrative of America during this transformative period. Her powerful composition immortalizes one man's journey while simultaneously reflecting upon themes of perseverance, tradition, and resilience that resonate with audiences even today.
