EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Samsonite hat box suitcase from Maes Millinery Shop, dating back to 1941-1994. Crafted by the renowned brand Samsonite, this light brown hard plastic suitcase exudes elegance and sophistication. Its pale green synthetic fabric lining adds a touch of refinement to its interior. The attention to detail is evident in the two metal spring-action latches that securely close the suitcase on either side of the handle. Speaking of which, the handle itself is made from a loop of brown plastic attached with a sturdy metal bracket. Above it sits a metal locking mechanism, ensuring utmost security during travel. A distinctive feature is the metal plaque proudly displaying "Samsonite" below the handle, signifying its quality craftsmanship and durability. The flat-bottomed edge boasts four metallic feet for added stability and protection. However, what truly makes this object special is its connection to Mae Reeves (1912-2016), an African-American milliner who broke barriers in her field. Her iconic business, Maes Millinery Shop in downtown Philadelphia, was not only known for its custom-made hats but also as one of the first shops owned by an African-American woman in the city. As we admire this heritage art piece at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), let us celebrate both Mae Reeves' pioneering spirit and Samsonite's timeless design that transcends decades. This photograph encapsulates not just fashion and travel but also represents progress and cultural significance within America's rich history.
