EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic moment of Samuel Gorton's landing in America in 1636. Fleeing religious persecution in England, Gorton sought refuge in the American colonies, where he founded a religious sect known as the Gortonites. However, his beliefs constantly clashed with the established Puritan church, leading to his banishment from Massachusetts. The image showcases Gorton standing tall and resolute on American soil, dressed in traditional 17th-century attire. His distinctive hat adds an air of authority to his presence as a leader among men. The artist Whymper skillfully portrays the sense of arrival and colonisation through this engraving. The print not only depicts an individual's journey but also symbolizes the larger concept of religious conflict and persecution that was prevalent during this time period. It serves as a reminder of those who risked everything for their beliefs and sought freedom in a new land. This historical snapshot is part of Cassells History of the United States by Edmund Ollier, published around 1880. Its monochrome presentation evokes a sense of nostalgia while highlighting significant events that shaped America's early history. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece, we are transported back to a pivotal moment when one man's quest for religious freedom forever altered the course of American history.
