Samuel Morley, abolitionist, political radical, and statesman, c1890. Morley (1809-1886) was the owner of a large and profitable woollen manufacturing business which employed thousands of workers in the East Midlands. Regarded as a model employer, Morley was also an active philanthropist. Politically a Liberal and a strong supporter of Gladstone, he was first elected to Parliament as member for Nottingham in 1865.
