EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Samuel Plimsoll, a prominent British politician and social reformer from the late 19th century. The artist behind this remarkable portrait is Moritz Klinkicht. Plimsoll (1824-1898) earned the endearing nickname "the sailors friend" due to his unwavering dedication to advocating for the rights and well-being of sailors. As a Liberal Member of Parliament between 1868 and 1880, Plimsoll made significant contributions that continue to shape maritime history. His most notable achievement was spearheading the passage of the Merchant Shipping Act in 1876. This legislation aimed to protect seafarers by establishing safety regulations for ships, ensuring fair treatment, and preventing overloading practices that endangered lives at sea. The impact of Plimsoll's work is further immortalized through the iconic "Plimsoll Mark" which adorns ships worldwide as a symbol of safe loading limits. This mark serves as a testament to his tireless efforts in improving conditions within the shipping industry. Moritz Klinkicht's masterful engraving captures Plimsoll's distinguished appearance with intricate detail. The monochrome black-and-white aesthetic adds depth and character to this nineteenth-century statesman's portrait. This exquisite print originates from Great Industries of Great Britain, Volume I, published by Cassell Petter and Galpin around c1880. It stands as a tribute not only to Samuel Plimsoll but also to all those who have dedicated their lives to championing social reform and fighting for justice in our society.
