EDITORS COMMENTS
Ando Hiroshige's Satsuma, section of sheet no. 18 from the series "Cutout Pictures of the Provinces..." (Kunizukushi harimaze zue), created in 1852, is a stunning example of the artist's mastery of color woodblock printing during the Edo period of Japan. This close-up image showcases the intricate details of the Satsuma province in Kyushu, Japan. The focus is on the drying leaves of various plants, arranged in a still life composition against a white background. The leaves, with their vibrant blues and greens, are meticulously cut out and carefully positioned, creating a sense of depth and texture. The use of white space and the simple, yet elegant, composition are characteristic of the Ukiyo-e artistic school. Hiroshige's skillful handling of color and his ability to capture the beauty of nature in its simplest form make this print a true masterpiece. The print was originally part of a larger series, and is now preserved in the Art Institute of Chicago's collection, where it continues to be admired for its artistic and historical significance.
