Our Saviour after the Temptation - painted by Sir George Hayter, M. A. S. L. 1850. Creator: Unknown
Our Saviour after the Temptation - painted by Sir George Hayter, M. A. S. L. 1850. Exhibition at the British Institution. This miracle must be considered the first great triumph of Jesus Christ on earth; and therefore, although the extreme exhaustion from having fasted forty days rendered the ministering of angels necessary when his human strength was nearly annihilated, still the moment must have been one of intense joy to the heavenly host; and has, therefore, been treated in the colouring so as to avoid any sad or melancholy impression on the spectator, by appropriating such colours for the wings and garments of the angels as were frequently given by the early painters of holy subjects....In the principal figure, the painter has attempted to portray divine resignation and exhaustion, free from the more acute bodily suffering under which the Saviour Is generally represented'. Our Saviour after the Temptation,
EDITORS COMMENTS
painted by Sir George Hayter in 1850, is a captivating work of art that portrays a pivotal moment in Christian history. The painting was exhibited at the British Institution and is a testament to Hayter's mastery of artistic technique and his deep understanding of the spiritual significance of the scene. According to an article published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, this painting represents the first great triumph of Jesus Christ on earth after his forty-day fast in the desert. The article notes that although Jesus was in a state of extreme exhaustion and required the ministrations of angels to restore his strength, the moment must have been one of intense joy for the heavenly host. The painting's color palette reflects this sense of joy and triumph. The angels' wings and garments are painted in vibrant hues, avoiding any sad or melancholic impression on the viewer. In the central figure of Jesus, Hayter has attempted to convey divine resignation and exhaustion, free from the more acute bodily suffering that is often depicted in other representations of the scene. The painting's composition is also noteworthy for its sense of balance and harmony. Jesus is depicted in a calm and serene pose, surrounded by the angels who attend to him. The use of light and shadow creates a sense of depth and three-dimensionality, drawing the viewer into the scene and allowing them to connect with the spiritual significance of the moment. Overall, "Our Saviour after the Temptation" is a beautiful and moving work of art that invites contemplation and reflection on the power and resilience of the human spirit. Hayter's masterful use of color, composition, and technique make this painting a true masterpiece of religious art.
