Scene at the Castle Gate, Lincoln, 1850. Creator: Unknown

Scene at the Castle Gate, Lincoln, 1850....what was the cause of their present distress? It was simply this - that the tenant-farmers and those engaged in cultivating the land were not able to make money enough to employ the labourers. (Cries of " Lower your rents.")...Within the last twenty years the population of the country had increased by 100, 000 men, and how could that population have been supported if the cultivation of the soil had not increased? (Cheers.) If Government, however, allowed foreigners, who had little or no taxation and no poor-rates, to come here and undersell the farmers, a great part of the land would go out of cultivation; and then what would become of the labourers ? (Cheers.) The foreigner would soon glut the markets of this country with his produce, but he would have his own price'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
Scene at the Castle Gate, Lincoln, 1850: A Cry for Protectionism This evocative image captures a pivotal moment in the history of Lincoln, England, as a large crowd of agricultural workers and farmers gathered at the city gate, demanding lower rents and protectionist policies. The scene, as depicted in an engraving from the Illustrated London News in 1850, reveals the economic distress that had befallen the community, with the population having grown significantly in the previous two decades, yet the cultivation of the land failing to keep pace. The caption accompanying the print sheds light on the cause of the unrest: the inability of tenant-farmers and laborers to make enough money to employ the workforce. The influx of foreigners, who had little or no taxation and no poor-rates, was seen as a major threat to the local farmers, as they were able to undersell the domestic produce in the markets. The fear was that if the government allowed free trade to continue, a significant portion of the land would go out of cultivation, leaving the laborers without work. The foreigner would soon glut the markets with their produce, but they would have their own price, leaving the local farmers at a disadvantage. The crowd, composed of men from all walks of agricultural life, expressed their concerns through passionate cries and demonstrations, calling for the protection of their livelihoods and the preservation of their community. The Castle Gate, with its imposing city walls, served as a symbolic backdrop to their plight, highlighting the urgency of their cause. This powerful image, though anonymous in its creation, stands as a testament to the economic struggles faced by the agricultural community during the 19th century and the resilience of the working class in the face of adversity.
