Scene from "Harlequin £. S. D", at the Surrey Theatre, 1844
Scene from " Harlequin £.S.D", at the Surrey Theatre, 1844. London stage production. This house opened with, as the bill says, a piece founded on Shakespeares " Seven Ages of Man, or the End of Crime" ; and, as far as we were able to judge from the usual confusion of a boxing-night, was tolerably successful; and the great feature of the evening, the pantomime, from the pen of the indefatigable Nelson Lee...is very good, and will, no doubt, be as remunerating to the lessee as the one of last year...Mr. W. H. Harvey, as Harlequin, Mr. T. Ridgway, as Clown, Mr. H. Corri, as Pantaloon, Miss Slaiter, as Columbine, sustained their parts admirably...Herr Von Joel considerably added to the evenings amusement, by giving his extraordinary Imitations of Beasts, Birds, &c. The house was literally crammed. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a scene from the 1844 London stage production of "Harlequin £. S. D" at the Surrey Theatre. The play, based on Shakespeare's "Seven Ages of Man, or the End of Crime" opened to relative success amidst the usual chaos of a boxing-night audience. The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the pantomime, written by the tireless Nelson Lee, which promises to be as lucrative as last year's production. The actors in this performance deserve commendation for their stellar performances. Mr. W. H. Harvey shines as Harlequin, while Mr. T. Ridgway brings laughter as Clown and Mr. H. Corri captivates as Pantaloon. Miss Slaiter impresses with her portrayal of Columbine. Adding to the amusement is Herr Von Joel, who delights audiences with his extraordinary imitations of beasts and birds. The theatre itself is packed to capacity, with every seat filled by eager spectators seeking entertainment in this vibrant era. This engraving from "Illustrated London News" provides a glimpse into 19th-century British theatre culture and showcases the talent and dedication that went into creating memorable performances during that time period. A captivating snapshot capturing an unforgettable moment in theatrical history; this print serves as a testament to both William Shakespeare's enduring influence and the creativity displayed by actors on stage during this era.
