The Scots Greys leaving Nottingham for the War in the East, 1854. Creator: Unknown
The Scots Greys leaving Nottingham for the War in the East, 1854. British troops leaving for the Crimean War: The Mayor...having arranged to bid the troops a public farewell...the Corporation assembled at the Exchange...The streets were lined with spectators, eager to pay the tribute of respect and good wishes to the brave fellows...The ancient "loving- cup" of the Corporation was then produced, and having been filled with wine, the Mayor (J. Reckless, Esq) addressed the Colonel and his officers, intimating the public sense of the good conduct of the regiment, and proposing the health of the Queen, which was drunk with great enthusiasm. The Colonel and other officers, and the municipal procession, having drunk from the cup, it was replenished...the Mayor...heartily drank to the health of Colonel Griffith, his officers, and men, and success and prosperity to the Scots Greys (Tremendous cheers)'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the poignant moment as The Scots Greys, a renowned cavalry regiment of the British Army, bid farewell to their loved ones and the city of Nottingham before embarking on their journey to the Crimean War in 1854. The scene unfolds on the streets of Nottingham, where the Corporation, led by Mayor J. Reckless, Esq., has gathered to pay tribute to the brave soldiers. The ancient 'loving-cup' of the Corporation is proudly displayed, filled with wine as a symbol of goodwill and respect. The Mayor addresses the Colonel and his officers, expressing the public's admiration for the regiment's conduct and proposing a toast to the Queen. The Colonel and his officers, along with the municipal procession, take turns drinking from the cup, which is then refilled for the Mayor to propose another toast - this time to the health and success of Colonel Griffith, his officers, and men of the Scots Greys. The crowd erupts in cheers, their voices echoing through the streets, as the soldiers take one last look at their homes before setting off to the East. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the brave men and women of the Scots Greys and the people of Nottingham during a pivotal moment in history. The image, taken from the pages of the Illustrated London News in 1854, offers a glimpse into the emotional farewells and the collective spirit that united the community during wartime.
