Seasonable Advice - Put by for a Frosty Day, 1861
Seasonable Advice - Put by for a Frosty Day, 1861. Mr Punch encourages a labourer to join the queue of fellow workers at the Post Office rather than spend his money on drink. The Post Office Savings Bank was founded in 1861 and, within its first ten years, had more than one million savers. Lower class workers had long been encouraged to save so as to provide for themselves and their families during the frequent seasonal periods of unemployment that caused so many families to drift into real poverty. From Punch, or the London Charivari, February 23, 1861

Seasonable Advice - Put by for a Frosty Day, 1861
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1861, we witness the power of Mr Punch's words as he encourages a hardworking labourer to make a wise choice. Standing on a street corner, surrounded by bustling buildings and fellow workers queuing at the Post Office, Mr Punch urges the man to resist the allure of alcohol and instead save his money for future uncertainties. During this era in history, lower-class workers faced frequent periods of unemployment that pushed many families into poverty. The newly founded Post Office Savings Bank aimed to alleviate these hardships by promoting saving habits among individuals like our protagonist. With its establishment in 1861, it quickly gained popularity with over one million savers within its first decade. The artist skillfully captures the moment of contemplation on the labourer's face as he ponders Mr Punch's advice. His nose slightly wrinkled in thought, he stands at a crossroads between indulgence and prudence. This satirical caricature serves as both social commentary and encouragement for financial responsibility. It reminds us that even amidst temptation and societal pressures, making smart choices can lead to long-term security for oneself and their loved ones. As we gaze upon this heritage image from the 19th century, let us reflect on how timeless such advice remains today – reminding us all to put aside some savings for those frosty days that may lie ahead.
