Section of a Coping Rail, 1st century. Creator: Unknown
Section of a Coping Rail, 1st century. The bells are intended to evoke the sounds that once accompanied the sacred space as much as visual ornamentation. A lion and a leonine figure with a human face bound enthusiastically as part of a parade of creatures who circle the monument in the proscribed clockwise direction. The exaggerated linear outlining of their features and the flatness of their bodies are stylistic features of relief sculpture from this period. The motif in the center has vegetal fronds symmetrically springing from a lotus rosette in the form of an auspicious symbol called shrivatsa, which is also found on the chests of Jinas-liberated beings of the Jain tradition-and the Hindu god Vishnu

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Section of a Coping Rail from the 1st century, created by an unknown artist. The intricate details and symbolism within this ancient artwork are truly mesmerizing. Adorned with bells that were meant to evoke both visual and auditory sensations, this rail once accompanied a sacred space. In the image, we see a lion and a leonine figure with a human face enthusiastically bound together as part of a grand procession of creatures encircling the monument in a clockwise direction. The relief sculpture from this period is characterized by exaggerated linear outlining and flatness of bodies, which adds to its unique stylistic features. At the center of attention lies an exquisite motif featuring symmetrically springing vegetal fronds stemming from a lotus rosette. This auspicious symbol called shrivatsa holds great significance not only in Hinduism but also in Jain tradition, where it can be found on the chests of liberated beings known as Jinas. Crafted out of sandstone, this stone masterpiece hails from Mathura in India during the early Kushan period. Preserved at The Cleveland Museum of Art, its origins remain shrouded in mystery as its creator remains unknown. Presented by Heritage Art/Heritage Images, this print allows us to marvel at the beauty and cultural richness captured within one frame while offering glimpses into our ancient past.
