Shakspeares Jug, 1844. Creator: Unknown
Shakspeares Jug, 1844. An accredited relic of Shakespeare. The accompanying details are from a handbill, printed by Mr, Bennett, of Tewkesbury: " This Jug is of cream-coloured earthenware, about nine inches in height, and sixteen round in the largest part, and somewhat in the shape of a modern coffee-pot. It is divided longitudinally into eight compartments, each horizontally subdivided; and within these the principal deities of the Grecian Mythology are represented in rather bold relief. Jupiter and Juno, Bacchus, Diana, Mercury, Apollo, Mars, &c.. are, all plainly distinguishable by their thrones, chariots, or characteristic animal attendants. To preserve the interior from dust, and the rim from accident, a silver top and edging were added about forty years ago, with a small medallion of Shakspeare upon it, inscribed " William Shakspeare, at the age of 40". From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

Shakespeare's Jug, 1844 - A Glimpse into the Mythological World
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases a remarkable artifact from the 16th century - Shakespeare's Jug. Created by an unknown artist in 1844, this cream-colored earthenware jug stands at nine inches tall and sixteen inches round at its largest part. Its unique shape resembles that of a modern coffee-pot. The jug is divided into eight compartments, each intricately adorned with representations of the principal deities from Greek mythology. From Jupiter and Juno to Bacchus, Diana, Mercury, Apollo, Mars, and more - these mythological figures are brought to life through bold relief carvings. Each deity can be easily distinguished by their thrones, chariots or characteristic animal attendants. To protect the interior from dust and prevent accidents on its rim, a silver top and edging were added around forty years prior to this print's creation. This addition also features a small medallion inscribed with "William Shakespeare at the age of 40" paying homage to the renowned playwright himself. As we gaze upon this extraordinary relic captured in stunning detail by The Illustrated London News in 1844, we are transported back in time to Victorian Britain. This memento serves as a testament to both Shakespeare's enduring legacy and the craftsmanship of ceramic pottery during that era.
