Sharpham, on the Dart, Devon - the Largest Rookery in England, 1856. Creator: Edmund Evans
Sharpham, on the Dart, Devon - the Largest Rookery in England, 1856. Bird-shooting in the English countryside:..the river, owing to its surpentine eccentricities, presents the appearance of ten distinct lakes. The woods of Sharpham slope down to the water's edge, and dip their boughs reverentially into the tide, which, in its daily rise and fall of seven or eight feet, leaves on them the blighting salt-water mark of this involuntarily immersion. One side of the river is crowned with thick woods of beech and ash, where rooks have had their hereditary abodes times out of mind, and formed a colony as large as, if not larger than, the most celebrated rookeries in Essex and Kent... the rooks hour is come, and amid an endless fusilade of every species of artillery, from the delicate Minie to the ancient blunderbuss, family after family of squab rooks are picked off, and come to the ground...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken by renowned English photographer Edmund Evans in 1856, showcases the picturesque scene of Sharpham on the Dart in Devon, England, famously known as the largest rookery in the country. The serene river, with its winding, sinuous shape, resembles ten distinct lakes, reflecting the surrounding woodlands of beech and ash. The trees, which slope down to the water's edge, bear the salt-water marks of the river's daily rise and fall, a testament to their submergence. The tranquility of the scene is disrupted by the impending arrival of bird-shooting season. The rooks, who have made their homes in the woods for generations, are about to face their annual ordeal. The sun casts a golden glow over the trees as the rooks' hour approaches. In the distance, hunters prepare their weapons, from the delicate Minie rifle to the ancient blunderbuss, anticipating the flight of the squab rooks. The air is filled with the sound of gunfire as family after family of rooks are picked off, their flight interrupted mid-air. The woods echo with the commotion, a stark contrast to the peaceful scene just moments before. The rooks, once abundant and unperturbed, are now a target, a symbol of the English countryside's complex relationship with nature and tradition.
