EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the historic arrival of the American clipper ship, The Ship Oriental, at the West India Docks in London in 1850. The exact creator of this image remains unknown, but it was published in the Illustrated London News, making it an invaluable record of this significant maritime event. The Ship Oriental was built in New York for the lucrative China trade and set sail on her maiden voyage on September 14, 1849. After an impressive journey of fourteen months and nineteen days, covering an astonishing 67,000 miles, she finally reached her destination. The logbook details of this voyage were obtained by J. Spiller of Wapping, with the permission of Captain T. D. Palmer. The Oriental brought approximately 1,600 tons of tea, priced at £6 per ton, making it a highly profitable venture. This was a considerable improvement over the other ships loading at Whampoa during the same period, which only managed to secure tea at £3 10s per ton. The majority of the cargo was consigned to three esteemed British firms, further emphasizing the commercial significance of this voyage. This print, published in the Illustrated London News, offers a glimpse into the vibrant maritime history of the 19th century. It showcases the power and efficiency of American clipper ships, which revolutionized the transportation of goods across the globe. The Ship Oriental's arrival in London marked a turning point in the global tea trade and solidified the United States' position as a major player in international commerce.
