The Shoemakers Arbour, Shrewsbury, 1860. Creator: Unknown
The Shoemakers Arbour, Shrewsbury, 1860. Engraving from a photograph by J. Groom. In Leighton's "Guide, Descriptive and Historical, through the Town of Shrewsbury, " mention is made of these arbours and of the custom connected with them: "We now continue our walk along the undulating eminence which rises abruptly from the Severn...until we arrive at Kingsland, a large tract of ground, the common property of the burgesses, studded with small inclosures and buildings called "Arbours, " to which the several incorporated trading companies of the town annually resort in procession on the second Monday after Trinity Sunday, accompanied by bands of music, flags, devices emblematical of their crafts, and preceded by "a king" on horseback, gaily dressed with crownlets and gauds of rare device, either representing the Monarch who granted their charters, or some principal personage of their trades. The Mayor and Corporation, attended by many of the respectable inhabitants of the place, visit the several companies, and partake of refreshments prepared in their respective arbours. On the reformation of religion this ceremonious procession was of course discontinued... From "Illustrated London News", 1860

EDITORS COMMENTS
The Shoemakers' Arbour in Shrewsbury, 1860, is an intriguing snapshot of a bygone era, captured through an engraving from a photograph by J. Groom. This image offers a glimpse into the rich history and traditions of Shrewsbury, a town in England located along the banks of the River Severn. The Shoemakers' Arbour is situated on a prominent hill overlooking the town, part of a large common area known as Kingsland. According to Leighton's "Guide, Descriptive and Historical, through the Town of Shrewsbury," these arbours and the customs associated with them have a long and storied past. During medieval times, the incorporated trading companies of Shrewsbury would annually process through the town on the second Monday after Trinity Sunday. Accompanied by bands of music, flags, and emblems symbolizing their crafts, the companies would make their way to their respective arbours on Kingsland. A "king" on horseback would lead the procession, either representing a monarch who granted their charters or a notable figure from their trades. The Mayor and Corporation, along with many other respectable townspeople, would visit each company, partaking in refreshments prepared in their arbours. This ceremonial procession, which was discontinued during the Reformation, is depicted in this image of the Shoemakers' Arbour. The engraving provides a fascinating window into the history and traditions of Shrewsbury, offering a glimpse into the communal spirit and sense of pride that once united its inhabitants. Today, the Shoemakers' Arbour stands as a testament to the town's rich heritage, a reminder of the customs and traditions that have shaped its identity over the centuries.
