Siege of Chartres, French Religious Wars, 1568 (1570). Artist: Jacques Tortorel

Siege of Chartres, French Religious Wars, 1568 (1570). Sappers working to undermine a bastion forming part of the citys defences. The Huguenots commanded by the Prince de Conde besieged Chartres at the end of February 1568, breaching the north wall with artillery. An assault launched on 7 March to capture the city was unsuccessful. The siege was lifted on the signature of the Peace of Longjumeau on 23 March. The French Religious Wars between the Catholics and the Protestant Huguenots took place between 1562 and 1598. The conflict ended when Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, granting Protestants and Catholics equal rights

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Siege of Chartres, French Religious Wars, 1568 (1570)", by Jacques Tortorel and Jean Perrissin, takes us back to a tumultuous period in history. The image depicts sappers diligently working to undermine a bastion as part of the city's defenses during the siege of Chartres. In this scene from the French Religious Wars between Catholics and Protestant Huguenots, we witness the intense struggle for power and religious dominance. Led by Prince de Conde, the Huguenots besieged Chartres in February 1568 but faced initial failure when their assault on March 7th did not capture the city. The print captures both the military engineering prowess required for such sieges and the resilience of those defending their beliefs within fortified walls. It serves as a reminder of how religion can ignite conflicts that shape nations' destinies. Ultimately, peace was achieved with the signing of the Peace of Longjumeau on March 23rd. However, it would take another three decades before Henry IV issued his Edict of Nantes granting equal rights to Protestants and Catholics. Through this powerful image, Tortorel and Perrissin transport us to a time marked by prejudice and religious fervor. It invites contemplation about how far we have come since then while reminding us that understanding and tolerance are essential ingredients for lasting peace.
