EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the ancient city of Marseilles during a significant moment in history - the Siege of Marseilles by Julius Caesar. The image, captured between 1882-1884, showcases the intense warfare that unfolded in this Roman city. Founded as Massalia by the Greeks around 600 BC, Marseilles became an influential trading hub connecting Rome and Gaul during Roman times. However, its independence was lost in 49 BC when it sided with Pompey against Julius Caesar during a civil war. This led to a four-month-long siege by Caesar's armies, ultimately resulting in his victory and capture of the city. The print depicts a scene filled with tension and anticipation. Various siege engines such as ballistas are visible, highlighting the advanced military technology employed during this time. The monochrome aesthetic adds depth to every detail engraved on this historical artifact. As we observe this artwork from La France et les Francais a Travers les Siecles, Volume I, we are transported back to an era where power struggles shaped destinies. It serves as a reminder of both the resilience of cities like Marseilles and the strategic brilliance of leaders like Julius Caesar. This print is not only an artistic representation but also a valuable historical document that allows us to delve into one chapter of France's rich past - where war met trade at the crossroads between Rome and Gaul.
