The signing ceremony of the Belgrade Declaration, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, 2 July 1955
The signing ceremony of the Belgrade Declaration, Belgrade, Yugoslavia, 2 July 1955. The signing of the Declaration by Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito (1892-1980) and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971) brought about a reconciliation between the two communist states after the rift caused by the Tito-Stalin split of 1948. Relations between the two countries would deteriorate again the following year after the Hungarian Uprising. Tito is on the far left of the photograph, with Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin (1895-1975) next to him. Khrushchev is second from the right. EDITORS COMMENTS
The signing ceremony of the Belgrade Declaration, captured in this historic photo print, marks a significant moment in the reconciliation between Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union. After years of strained relations following the Tito-Stalin split of 1948, Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev came together on 2 July 1955 to mend their differences. In this monochrome image, we see President Tito standing proudly on the far left, flanked by Soviet Premier Nikolai Bulganin. Khrushchev stands second from the right, his presence symbolizing an important step towards unity between these two communist states. The atmosphere is one of diplomacy and camaraderie as leaders engage in conversation while dressed in military uniforms and formal attire. The visit signifies not only a political rapprochement but also a cultural exchange between nations. Although this moment brought hope for lasting peace and cooperation, tensions would resurface just a year later with the Hungarian Uprising. Nevertheless, this photograph serves as a reminder of an era when ideological differences were set aside momentarily for mutual understanding. Preserved within the Museum of Yugoslavian History in Belgrade, this black-and-white snapshot captures an essential chapter in 20th-century politics. It immortalizes statesmen who shaped history through their dialogue and negotiation during a critical decade.
