EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the dignified presence of Sir Charles Wentworth Dilke, MP, Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs in 1881. Dilke, a radical Liberal politician, dedicated his career to advocating for progressive legislation and social reform. Serving as the Member of Parliament for Chelsea from 1866 to 1886, he played a significant role in passing laws that granted women the municipal franchise, regulated working hours, and legalized unions. Although Dilke's ministerial career came to an abrupt end due to a scandalous divorce case, this portrait reminds us of his contributions as a statesman during the late 19th century. The image showcases his distinguished profile with a full beard that adds an air of wisdom and authority. Taken from "Men of Mark: A Gallery of Contemporary Portraits" this photograph was captured by Lock and Whitfield. Alongside brief biographical notices by Thompson Cooper, these portraits aimed to honor men who excelled in various fields such as politics, science, literature, art, law, medicine, and more. As we gaze upon this monochrome image today through the lens of history, it serves as both a testament to Dilke's political legacy and an intriguing glimpse into Victorian-era Britain.
