Sir Francis Drake playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe, 1588 (c1900). Artist: Trelleek
Sir Francis Drake playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe, 1588 (c1900). The famous game of bowls supposedly played by Sir Francis Drake whilst awaiting the arrival of the Spanish Armada. The story, probably apocryphal, goes that when Drake was informed that the Armada had been sighted, rather than putting to sea immediately, he decided that he had time to finish the game and beat the Spaniards too. From Peeps into the Past by Trelleek, published c1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the legendary Sir Francis Drake in a moment of leisure amidst historical turmoil. Painted by Trelleek around 1900, it depicts the iconic scene of Drake playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe in 1588, supposedly while awaiting the arrival of the formidable Spanish Armada. The story behind this image, though likely embellished over time, speaks volumes about Drake's unwavering confidence and audacity. As the tale goes, upon receiving news that the Armada had been sighted off the coast, instead of rushing to set sail immediately, he calmly decided to finish his game before taking on both his opponents on land and at sea. Drake's nonchalant demeanor is brilliantly captured here as he stands atop the clifftop overlooking Plymouth Sound. Dressed in traditional Tudor attire with an air of unconcerned heroism about him, he epitomizes British resilience and determination during this crucial period in history. Beyond its historical significance, this image also serves as a metaphor for strategic thinking and calculated risk-taking. It reminds us that even in times of war or uncertainty, there can be value in patience and careful planning before engaging our adversaries head-on. As we gaze upon this lithograph from Trelleek's "Peeps into the Past" we are transported back to a pivotal moment when one man's bravery became etched into Britain's collective memory forever.
