EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir George Taubman Goldie (1846-1925) was a prominent British colonial administrator, Governor of the Royal Niger Company, and President of the Royal Geographical Society. This black and white portrait, created as an engraving after a photograph by Elliott & Fry, showcases Goldie in the prime of his career. The image, taken around the turn of the 20th century, captures the intensity and determination in his gaze, reflecting his significant contributions to the colonial administration and imperialist endeavors in Africa. Goldie's well-groomed moustache and formal attire further emphasize his distinguished status as a man of authority and influence. Born in London, Goldie joined the Niger Expedition of 1879, which aimed to explore and establish British control over the Niger River region. He later became the British Consul-General to the Niger Delta in 1885 and played a crucial role in the suppression of the Aba War in 1897. Goldie's efforts to establish a unified political structure in the region led to the formation of the Nigerian Protectorate in 1900. This portrait is a striking reminder of a pivotal era in history, when European powers sought to expand their empires and reshape the world. The image is taken from Cassell's History of England, Vol. IX, published by Cassell and Company, Limited, in London, Paris, New York, and Melbourne. The engraving, produced by Elliott & Fry, adds an artistic touch to the historical record, making it a valuable addition to any collection focusing on colonialism, imperialism, or the history of Africa.
