Sketches in British Columbia: the town of Douglas, and Douglas Lake, 1864. Creator: Unknown

Sketches in British Columbia: the town of Douglas, and Douglas Lake, 1864. 'The site where this town now stands was, before the gold fever began, in 1858, a dense forest of gigantic pines...Since that period, clearing has steadily progressed, and the busy little town of Douglas, with its wide streets laid out at right angles and partially cleared, begins to assume an air of civilisation, though its houses are generally still of the most primitive wooden order of architecture. Douglas, however, being at the head of the up-river navigation along this route, has become the most important depot for the inland traffic of the colony...Nearly 3000 tons of goods were transported over this route last year. Owing to the want of any land near Douglas suitable for agricultural pursuits, its population is limited to few more than those who are engaged in store-keeping and forwarding goods to the upper country. It has a sawmill, several smiths' and carpenters' shops, kept fully employed, and, like all mining towns, has its due proportion of hotels, restaurants, and billiard saloons...Law and justice are administered by a stipendiary magistrate, whose residence is shown in the left corner of the Engraving'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Sketches in British Columbia: the town of Douglas and Douglas Lake in 1864. The image, created by an unknown artist, provides a glimpse into the transformation of this once dense forest of gigantic pines into a bustling little town. The town of Douglas is depicted with its wide streets laid out at right angles, showcasing signs of progress and civilization amidst its primitive wooden architecture. As the head of up-river navigation along this route, Douglas has become a vital depot for inland traffic in the colony. With nearly 3000 tons of goods transported over this route last year alone, Douglas plays a crucial role in facilitating trade and commerce in the region. Despite limited land suitable for agriculture, the town's population is primarily comprised of storekeepers and goods forwarders. From sawmills to smiths' shops to carpenters' workshops, Douglas boasts a thriving economy supported by various industries catering to the needs of its residents and visitors alike. The presence of hotels, restaurants, and billiard saloons further adds to the vibrant atmosphere that characterizes mining towns like Douglas. Administered by a stipendiary magistrate residing within view on the left corner of the engraving, law and justice are upheld within this growing community. This historical snapshot serves as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity displayed by early settlers who helped shape British Columbia's landscape during this transformative period.
