Sketches by Lieutenant Cameron in Central Africa...Lukuga Outlet of Lake Tanganyika...1876. Creator: Unknown
Sketches by Lieutenant Cameron in Central Africa: entrance to the Lukuga Outlet of Lake Tanganyika, 1876. Lieutenant Cameron's more exact survey led to the discovery of an important outlet on the western side, flowing with a steady current in the direction of the Atlantic. This effluent, which was called by the natives the Lukuga, he found to be flowing from the lake with a full, steady current at the rate of a mile and a quarter per hour...he saw floating logs carried into the mass and disappear, showing that the current was still running. The chief of the district, who seems to have been intelligent and friendly, assured Cameron that the stream flowed into the Lualaba, and the information obtained from Arab traders not only confirmed this, but satisfied him that the Lualaba could be no other than the great river Congo'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, taken from Sketches by Lieutenant Cameron in Central Africa, depicts the entrance to the Lukuga Outlet of Lake Tanganyika in 1876. At the time, the precise location of this important outlet was unknown, but Lieutenant Cameron's meticulous survey led to its discovery on the western side of the lake. The steady current flowing out of the lake at a rate of a mile and a quarter per hour was a clear indication of an outlet, and floating logs carried into the mass and disappearing further confirmed its existence. The chief of the district, who is depicted in the foreground of the image, was reportedly an intelligent and friendly leader. He assured Lieutenant Cameron that the Lukuga stream flowed into the Lualaba River. This information was further corroborated by Arab traders, who confirmed that the Lualaba was indeed the great river Congo. The discovery of the Lukuga Outlet was a significant achievement in the exploration of Central Africa, as it provided crucial information about the geography of the region and the connection between Lake Tanganyika and the Congo River. This image, taken from the Illustrated London News in 1876, offers a glimpse into the past, providing a window into the exploration of Central Africa during a time when much was still unknown about the region.
