Snubbed!, 1883. Artist: Joseph Swain
Snubbed!, 1883. Spain and Germany are shown taking a walk together, with France scowling jealously in the background. In November 1883, the Crown Prince of Germany visited Spain on a return visit after one made by the King of Spain to Germany. This was the first exchange of visits between the two countries for some 200 years. France, however, were concerned at the growing friendship between Germany and Spain, although, when the King of Spain visited France earlier in the year, he had been received without due ceremony. From Punch, or the London Charivari, November 24, 1883

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that encapsulates the intricate web of political alliances and tensions in 19th-century Europe. The artist, Joseph Swain, skillfully portrays the delicate balance between friendship and jealousy among nations. In this satirical cartoon, we witness Spain and Germany strolling together, symbolizing their newfound camaraderie following a historic exchange of visits after two centuries. However, lurking in the background is France, scowling with unmistakable envy. France's concern over the burgeoning alliance between Germany and Spain becomes evident as they feel left out from this emerging partnership. The image serves as a commentary on foreign affairs during that era when diplomatic relationships were crucial for maintaining power and influence. It also highlights how even seemingly insignificant gestures or perceived slights could have far-reaching consequences. Swain's expert engraving technique brings to life an array of allegorical figures representing different countries' interests. The monochrome black-and-white aesthetic adds depth to the satire while emphasizing the gravity of these international dynamics. This heritage image offers us a glimpse into an important moment in history where politics intersected with personal emotions like jealousy and insecurity. Through its clever composition and nuanced symbolism, "Snubbed!, 1883" invites viewers to reflect on timeless themes such as diplomacy, power struggles, and human nature itself.
