EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the South front of Baynards Castle in London, as it would have appeared around 1640. The artist, Andrew Birrell, skillfully brings to life this historical landmark that holds a significant place in British history. Originally constructed as a house, Baynards Castle was transformed into a royal palace by Henry VII during the late 15th century. It held great importance for the Tudor dynasty, as Henry VIII gifted it to Catherine of Aragon on the eve of their wedding. However, tragedy struck when the Great Fire of London ravaged the city in 1666, leaving Baynards Castle in ruins. Despite its destruction, fragments of this once magnificent structure survived well into the 19th century. This print allows us to glimpse into its former glory and appreciate its architectural beauty against the backdrop of River Thames. The monochrome image showcases not only the castle but also surrounding elements such as sailing boats gracefully navigating along the riverbank. It provides a snapshot of life during that era and offers insights into transportation and religious influences at that time. Andrew Birrell's meticulous attention to detail transports viewers back centuries ago while Sir Walter Besant's book "London in Time of Tudors" further enriches our understanding of this historical site. This print serves as a valuable piece for those interested in British geography, architecture enthusiasts or anyone captivated by England's rich cultural heritage.
