EDITORS COMMENTS
This image, titled 'The Speaker of the House of Commons' Levee, 1857,' depicts a grand and formal occasion in the heart of Victorian London. The Right Honourable Charles Shaw-Lefevre, 1st Viscount Eversley, is shown bidding farewell to his parliamentary colleagues as Speaker of the House of Commons, an office he held from 1839 to 1857. The event took place at his mansion in Eaton-square, and the Levee was attended by nearly every member in London, some of whom had traveled specifically to pay their last respects. The room is adorned with elegant chandeliers, casting a warm, inviting glow over the gathering. The men, dressed in their full parliamentary attire, are deep in conversation, their expressions conveying a sense of camaraderie and respect. The Speaker, who is seen shaking hands with a colleague, exudes a regal air, embodying the metaphorical 'old boys network' or 'old boys club' that was prevalent in British politics during the nineteenth century. This evocative wood engraving was published in the esteemed 'Illustrated London News' in 1857, providing a glimpse into the political and social landscape of the time. The intricate detail and tonal range of the print showcase the skill of the engraver, making it a valuable addition to any collection of historical or political art.
