One of the sphinxes, Victoria Embankment, London, 1924-1926
One of the sphinxes, Victoria Embankment, London, 1924-1926. The Victoria Embankment on the north side of the Thames was designed by Joseph Bazalgette. Completed in 1870, its main purpose was to accommodate Bazalgettes new main sewer and the Metropolitan District underground railway. The embankment also offered a pleasant thoroughfare along the riverbank, with a promenade and gardens, as well as reducing the risk of flooding from the river. A print from Hutchinsons Britain Beautiful, edited by Walter Hutchinson, volume III, 1924-1926

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the bustling streets of London in the 1920s. The image showcases one of the iconic sphinxes that adorn the Victoria Embankment, a remarkable feat of civil engineering designed by Joseph Bazalgette. Completed in 1870, this embankment served multiple purposes. It provided a home for Bazalgette's innovative main sewer system and also accommodated the Metropolitan District underground railway. However, it was not just a functional structure; it offered Londoners a delightful promenade along the riverbank with gardens and beautiful views of the Thames. The sphinx featured in this photograph stands as an enigmatic sentinel amidst its Victorian surroundings. Its presence adds an air of mystery and intrigue to this already picturesque location. The streetlights lining the road illuminate both pedestrians and vehicles passing by, creating an enchanting atmosphere after dusk. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece, we are transported to another time - a time when horse-drawn carriages traversed these streets, women wore elegant dresses with wide-brimmed hats, and men donned tailored suits complete with top hats. This print from Hutchinson's Britain Beautiful captures not only a moment frozen in time but also pays homage to Sir Joseph William Bazalgette's significant contribution to London's infrastructure. It serves as a reminder that even utilitarian structures can be transformed into works of art that stand as testaments to human ingenuity throughout history.
