Spring Landscape, 2nd half 17th Century. Creator: Kuncan (Chinese, 1612-c. 1673)

Spring Landscape, 2nd half 17th Century. One of the acclaimed " Four Monks" (the other three being Zhu Da, Daoji, and Hongren), Kuncan was known for the rough and rustic style of his landscape paintings. This painting was once part of a large album, painted at the request of his friend Cheng Zhengkui (active 1630-74), with whom he shared a common interest in painting and poetry. The inscription contains a poem, which reads: Wandering through mountains and oblivious of time, We met in casual shoes (and attires). The wind and dew drops harbor a chilling emptiness. Only with patience and silence can the Chan inspiration come

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the "Spring Landscape" painting, created in the second half of the 17th century by Kuncan, a renowned Chinese artist. Kuncan was one of the esteemed "Four Monks" alongside Zhu Da, Daoji, and Hongren. His distinctive style was characterized by its rough and rustic portrayal of landscapes. Originally part of a large album commissioned by his friend Cheng Zhengkui, this particular painting reflects their shared passion for both painting and poetry. The inscription on the artwork contains a poignant poem that speaks to the profound connection between nature and human existence. The image depicts a serene scene with mountains as its backdrop. As we gaze upon it, we are transported to a world where time seems to stand still. The figures in casual attire suggest an unpretentious encounter amidst nature's beauty. The subtle play of wind and dew drops evokes a sense of emptiness tinged with chilliness—an atmosphere that can only be truly appreciated through patience and silence. It is within these moments that Chan inspiration arises—a spiritual awakening sought after by many during China's Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Preserved on double album leaf mounted as a handscroll using ink and color on paper, this masterpiece now resides at The Cleveland Museum of Art. Through this exquisite print from Heritage Art/Heritage Images, we have the privilege to admire Kuncan's skillful brushwork while immersing ourselves in the rich cultural heritage he represents.
