EDITORS COMMENTS
The SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse and Captain Otto Cuppers, c1905. This print showcases the majestic passenger liner of the North German Lloyd shipping line, known as the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. With its impressive dimensions of 627 feet in length and 66 feet in width, this twin-screw steamship was a true marvel of engineering during its time. Named after the esteemed German Emperor, Kaiser Wilhelm I, this grand vessel was launched in 1897. However, tragedy struck when a devastating fire broke out on board while docked at Hoboken, New Jersey in 1900, claiming the lives of 100 crew members. In this remarkable image captured around 1905, we see Captain Otto Cuppers standing proudly beside his beloved ship. As one can imagine, commanding such an extraordinary vessel required great skill and expertise. Sadly, fate had more challenges in store for the SS Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse. During World War I it was converted into an auxiliary cruiser but met a tragic end when it exploded following an encounter with a British ship. This postcard serves as a testament to both the glory and untimely demise of this iconic ocean liner. It is truly a window into history that allows us to appreciate not only the technological advancements of its time but also pays homage to those who sailed aboard her.
