St Albans Cathedral, Hertfordshire, c1870. Artist: WL Walton
St Albans Cathedral, Hertfordshire, c1870. The great medieval abbey church of St Albans developed on the site of the shrine to St Alban, who died in 209 and was one of the earliest Christian martyrs. The church was bought by the townspeople of St Albans in 1553 to serve as their parish church after the abbey was closed by the Dissolution of the Monasteries. It gained cathedral status when St Albans was granted its City Charter in 1877. The building has the longest nave of any British cathedral

This print showcases the magnificent St Albans Cathedral in Hertfordshire, captured around 1870 by the talented artist WL Walton. The cathedral stands as a testament to centuries of history and religious significance. Originally built on the site of St Alban's shrine, who was an early Christian martyr, this great medieval abbey church became the heart of worship for the townspeople after its purchase in 1553 following the Dissolution of the Monasteries. With its soaring tower and stunning Gothic architecture, St Albans Cathedral is a true marvel. Its grandeur is further emphasized by its distinction as having the longest nave among all British cathedrals. This iconic landmark gained cathedral status when St Albans was granted its City Charter in 1877. The lithograph print beautifully captures every intricate detail of this historic structure, from its impressive exterior to its richly adorned interiors. It allows us to appreciate not only the craftsmanship that went into constructing such a masterpiece but also invites us to reflect on centuries past when religion played a central role in people's lives.
