St. John Lateran - Rome, 1850. Creator: Unknown
St. John Lateran - Rome, 1850. Pope Sylvester, under the immediate auspices of the Emperor, and with the funds furnished by him for the purpose, erected a magnificent church on part of the Lateran grounds, and attached to the palace, and dedicated it to the Apostles St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. Hence the name which the Basilica still bears. It has, ever since its first foundation, been regarded as the especial cathedral church of the Pope in his capacity of Bishop of the See of Rome, who accordingly, on his elevation to the pontificate, enters upon its possession with due ceremonial and formality, and there receives the triple crown or tiara, the fisherman's ring, and all the other Papal insignia which denote at the coronation of a Pope his investiture...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1850, showcases the breathtaking exterior of St. John Lateran in Rome, Italy. Dating back to the 4th century, this archbasilica holds significant historical and religious importance as it is regarded as the cathedral church of the Pope in his role as Bishop of Rome. The church was initially built under the patronage of Pope Sylvester, with funds provided by Emperor Constantine, and was dedicated to St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist. The name "Lateran" derives from the Latin word "hortus latere," meaning "the lateral garden," as it was situated on the Lateran grounds. This neoclassical masterpiece has been the site of numerous papal coronations, with the Pope receiving the triple crown or tiara, the fisherman's ring, and other Papal insignia upon his elevation to the pontificate. The basilica's grandeur is evident in this photograph, with its impressive columns, intricate detailing, and the striking contrast between the dark, textured stone and the bright, sunlit sky. The Lateran Basilica, also known as San Giovanni in Laterano, is a must-visit destination for tourists and history enthusiasts alike, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of Italy and the enduring influence of Christianity on European art and architecture. This photograph, taken over 170 years ago, remains a testament to the timeless beauty and historical significance of St. John Lateran.
