EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the timeless beauty of St. Marthas Chapel, as seen from Shalford Common in 1911. The artist behind this masterpiece is none other than Jamess Ogilvy, whose talent for capturing architectural wonders shines through in this piece. St. Marthas Church, located in Surrey, holds a significant place in history and has been recognized as a grade II listed building by English Heritage. Its origins date back to the 12th century when a church stood on this site before falling into ruin during the 18th century. However, thanks to the visionary architect Henry Woodyer (1816-1896), who undertook its reconstruction from 1848-1850, St. Marthas Church was brought back to life. Woodyer skillfully incorporated many original features from the 12th century design, including magnificent Norman arches at its main entrance. This particular photograph is featured in "A Pilgrimage In Surrey". Volume 1 by James S. Ogilvy and published by George Routledge & Sons Limited in London in 1914. The image not only showcases the architectural grandeur of St. Marthas Chapel but also serves as a testament to our rich heritage and cultural legacy that deserves preservation and admiration for generations to come.
