St. Pauls Cathedral, Calcutta, 1845. Creator: Josiah Wood Whymper
St. Pauls Cathedral, Calcutta, 1845. New Victorian Gothic church in India....the architect is Colonel Forbes, of the Engineers. The style of architecture is Gothic, or, as Mr. Britton terms it, Christian, modified by circumstances, that is, Indo-Gothic, or Indo Christian, if such words may be allowed.... Daniel Wilson, Bishop of Calcutta, wrote: " My appreciation of the spiritual importance of the Cathedral as the first beginning of an indigenous Ministry, and the first Missionary institution not dependent on friends and societies at home, commenced in India, is higher than it ever was. I believe it is God who put it into the hearts of his servants. My object, in the whole is, as I trust, the glory of Christ and the salvation of souls. The external edifice is nothing. It is the edification of an invisible church to Christ in Heathen and Mahommedan India, which is my aim, my hope, and my prayer." From " Illustrated London News", 1845, Vol VII

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent St. Paul's Cathedral in Calcutta, captured by the talented Josiah Wood Whymper in 1845. The cathedral stands as a testament to the architectural prowess of Colonel Forbes, an engineer who designed this New Victorian Gothic church in India. Combining elements of both Gothic and Christian styles, it embodies a unique Indo-Gothic or Indo-Christian aesthetic. The significance of this grand structure extends beyond its physical beauty. As expressed by Daniel Wilson, Bishop of Calcutta at that time, the cathedral holds immense spiritual importance as it marked the beginning of an indigenous Ministry and missionary institution not reliant on external support from friends and societies back home. This pioneering endeavor was seen as a divine inspiration bestowed upon God's servants. Bishop Wilson's focus lies not solely on the external edifice but rather on building an invisible church dedicated to Christ amidst Heathen and Muslim communities in India. His aim is to bring glory to Christ while saving souls through his ministry within these diverse religious contexts. Whymper's photograph captures more than just bricks and mortar; it encapsulates Bishop Wilson's vision for spiritual transformation within a land steeped in different faiths. It serves as a visual reminder of the dedication and determination required to establish such institutions that transcend cultural boundaries for the betterment of humanity.
