St. Paul's Church, Malta, Built at the Expense of the late Queen Dowager Adelaide, 1850. The first stone was laid by Queen Adelaide on the 20th of March, 1839, and the foundation was completed by the close of the year...No labour was spared by the superintendent architect to insure the durability of the edifice; and, though often with immense difficulty, every part of the foundation was based upon solid rock, which, in many instances, was found covered with 30 feet of rubbish. The main features of the exterior are a lofty portico facing N.E. and supported by six Ionic columns; and a tower and spire, 130 feet high, surmounted by a cross'. EDITORS COMMENTS
St. Paul's Church, Malta: A Testament to Queen Adelaide's Legacy (1850) This evocative photograph captures the majestic beauty of St. Paul's Pro Cathedral in Valletta, Malta. Dedicated to St. Paul the Apostle, this neoclassical masterpiece was built at the expense of Queen Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, who laid the first stone on March 20, 1839. The foundation of this architectural marvel was completed by the end of the year, with no expense spared by the superintendent architect to ensure its durability. The laborers faced immense challenges, as they had to base every part of the foundation on solid rock, often found buried under 30 feet of rubbish. The main exterior features of St. Paul's Church include a lofty portico facing northeast, supported by six Ionic columns, and a tower and spire, reaching a height of 130 feet and topped with a cross. This neoclassical edifice, a testament to the Victorian era, stands as a symbol of Adelaide's dedication to her faith and her commitment to the people of Malta. This photograph, engraved from an illustration published in the Illustrated London News in 1850, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when grandeur and religious devotion were at the heart of architectural design. The image, created by an unknown artist, remains an enduring reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Malta and its connection to the British monarchy.
