Stag Hunt in the New-Road on Tuesday, 1850. Creator: Unknown
Stag Hunt in the New-Road on Tuesday, 1850....the inhabitants of Camden Town [in London] were astonished at the unusual sight of a fine stag, or red deer, running at full speed...with five hounds in full cry at his heels...[The stag] made a bolt at the iron gate, leading through Mabledon-place into Burton-crescent...and terrified at the number of vehicles passing the New-road, he dashed in at the gate in front of the house of Messrs. Prior's stove grate manufactory, whence, seeing the shop door open, he darted into the house, and was there speedily secured. The strange scene attracted some thousands of persons, and it required the assistance of about a dozen policemen to preserve Mr. Prior's railings from destruction...numbers of women and children paid a penny each for admission to the yard to see so strange a visitor...The run, from first to last, was over not less than thirty-five miles...'. EDITORS COMMENTS
Stag Hunt in the New-Road on Tuesday, 1850" is an intriguing photograph capturing an extraordinary event that took place in Camden Town, London. The image, though not dated, is believed to have been taken during this time based on the detailed description published in the Illustrated London News on September 14, 1850. The inhabitants of Camden Town were taken aback when they witnessed a magnificent stag, or red deer, dashing through the streets at full speed, pursued by five determined hounds. The stag made a desperate attempt to escape the hunters by bolting through an iron gate, leading into Burton-crescent, but the commotion caused by the chase attracted thousands of onlookers. The stag, terrified by the number of vehicles passing the New-road, made a sudden dash into the yard of Messrs. Prior's stove grate manufactory, where it was quickly secured. The unusual scene brought the streets to a standstill, and it took the efforts of about a dozen policemen to preserve Mr. Prior's railings from destruction. Curiosity drew large crowds, and many women and children paid a penny each for admission to the yard to catch a glimpse of the strange visitor. The run, from start to finish, was estimated to have covered over thirty-five miles. This photograph is a testament to the excitement and intrigue that such an event could generate in Victorian London. The creator of this photograph remains unknown, but the image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a unique insight into the lives of Londoners during this era. The photograph's raw energy and the sense of excitement it conveys continue to captivate viewers, making it a valuable addition to any historical collection.
