Statue of Augustus as Jupiter, first half of 1st century BC

Statue of Augustus as Jupiter, first half of 1st century BC. Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (63 BC-14 AD) became one of a triumvirate of rulers after the death in 44 BC of Julius Caesar, his great-uncle, whose dictatorship had brought an end to the Roman republic. He became sole ruler in 31 BC after defeating Mark Anthony at the Battle of Actium, and in 27 BC proclaimed himself Emperor, adopting the title Caesar Augustus. Octavians rule, which lasted until 14 AD, ended a century of civil strife and was a period of peace and prosperity in which Rome attained the height of its imperial power. Found in the collection of The Hermitage, St Petersburg

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the magnificent Statue of Augustus as Jupiter, dating back to the first half of the 1st century BC. The statue depicts Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, who rose to power after the demise of his great-uncle, Julius Caesar. As part of a triumvirate ruling system, Octavianus emerged victorious and became Rome's sole ruler in 31 BC following his triumph over Mark Antony at the Battle of Actium. In 27 BC, he proclaimed himself Emperor and adopted the title Caesar Augustus. His reign lasted until 14 AD and brought an end to a tumultuous century marked by civil strife within Rome. This period under Augustus' leadership was characterized by peace and prosperity, representing Rome's pinnacle of imperial power. The photograph captures this remarkable marble portrait housed in The Hermitage collection in St Petersburg. It portrays Augustus seated majestically as Jupiter, embodying both his earthly authority as emperor and divine status as a deity. The regal colors and intricate details highlight his royal stature while evoking a sense of awe-inspiring reverence. This image serves as a powerful reminder of Augustus' significant role in shaping Roman history—a visionary leader whose rule ushered in an era defined by stability and cultural achievements for centuries to come.
