EDITORS COMMENTS
Step into the past and embark on a visual journey through the breathtaking landscapes of Europe with this stunning panorama from The Stereorama at Cremorne Gardens, captured in 1860. This image, created by the eminent artists Grieve and Telbin, invites us to explore the route to Italy via the St. Gothard Pass. The panorama opens with the awe-inspiring sight of 'The Devil's Bridge; Amstag; Fluellen' and the Bay of Uri, leading us to the shores of Lake Lucerne. Our eyes then wander up to the noble vista of Lago Maggiore, and terminate at the grand monastic group of the Madonna del Sasso, perched majestically on a commanding rocky eminence. This panoramic landscape is an attempt to accomplish by means of painting and modelling the peculiar effects produced by stereoscopic glasses, and more particularly that appearance of relief and solidity in objects which painting alone cannot thoroughly realise. The result is a visual experience that so nearly approaches reality as to mystify the senses. As the spectator stands in close proximity to the objects in the foreground, they might almost pluck a leaf from a tree or a blade of grass from the mountain path at their feet. The realism is further enhanced by the introduction of real water, pumped in at the rate of nine hundred gallons a minute to supply the mimic torrent issuing beneath the Devil's Bridge. The Stereorama at Cremorne Gardens was housed in a building measuring some 120 feet across and 50 feet high, a testament to the grandeur and innovation of this Victorian marvel.
