EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a study for St. Elizabeth of Hungary, dating back to the late 19th century. The subject of this portrait is Elizabeth, daughter of Andras II of Hungary, who lived from 1207 to 1231. After her husband's untimely death during a crusade in 1227, she devoted herself to caring for the poor and joined the Franciscan order. The artist behind this remarkable piece remains unknown; however, their talent shines through as they beautifully capture St. Elizabeth's profile with meticulous attention to detail. Her face exudes piety and asceticism while her eyes gaze downward in contemplation. Marianne Stokes, a renowned British artist known for her religious-themed works during the Victorian era, played a role in bringing this study to life by reproducing it as a print for The Magazine of Art in 1901. This monochrome image transports us back centuries ago when Christianity was deeply ingrained within society. It serves as both an artistic masterpiece and historical documentation of faith and devotion. As we admire this portrait today, we are reminded not only of St. Elizabeth's selfless acts but also of the power that art possesses in preserving our history and culture.
